Frequently asked questions

Can anyone join Maggie's Online Centre?

Anyone who is 18 or over can join and participate in Maggie's Online Centre.

What is a profile?

A profile is a registered account with Maggie's Online Centre. It comprises your username and the information you create at registration to organise what you do on the site and what can be seen about you by other members. Your username is how you'll be known in the Online Centre so it's important you choose a name you're truly comfortable having. For example, if you choose to register with the username 'MickeyMouse', that's the name by which people will know you and recognise your posts.

Your dashboard is the page you see when you log it lists any messages you have received or sent and shows recent blogs posted by members on your friends list, groups that you belong to and conversations you have taken part in.

Your profile page is what other members of the Centre see when they click on your username. Depending on the privacy settings you choose it may show some or all of your blog entries and list any groups that you belong to.

How do I create a profile?

Clicking on the orange register button on the Online Centre homepage will take you to the registration page. Follow the instructions and at the end of the process you'll be sent a confirmation e-mail to say your account is ready. You will need a valid e-mail address to register and will need to enter a unique username to create your profile.

How do I change my privacy settings on my profile?

You can edit your profile at any time through your dashboard. Once you've logged in, click 'My settings' on the left-hand menu and select the privacy settings you want. Click 'Save changes' to apply any changes you have made.

What is a blog?

A blog is like an online diary, usually written to be read publically, that is an optional part of your profile. You can choose to make each of your blog entries available in one of three ways:

  • To anyone
  • Only accessible to friends and family, or
  • Private so only you can see them

How do I create a blog?

You need to be a member of the Maggie's Online Centre to create a blog so register or log in to your profile first.

To start your blog, go to your dashboard and click on 'My Blog' on the left-hand menu. Click 'Start Your Own Blog' and then 'Yes, I do want to create a blog' and fill in the title and description of your blog. Click 'browse' to select your own image, or use the default one, and click 'Save Changes'.

To add an entry to your blog, click on 'Add A New Blog Entry' and type your title and blog entry. Add some tags (or keywords) to describe your entry (this will make it easier for other members to find it in the Online Centre) and select your privacy settings. Click 'Submit Entry' to save your blog.

You can edit or delete each blog entry or add another entry at any time but you can't have more than one blog in your profile.

What is a personal message?

You can contact another member of the Online Centre privately by sending them a personal message. This message is between you and the other member only. You can also contact members of Maggie's Online team directly through the personal messaging system.

Maggie's Online Centre moderators have the facility to view every personal message inbox but will only view a message if a member reports it through the 'Alert a Moderator' button, meaning it has potentially broken site rules.

If this happens we will notify you that we have viewed the message and let you know if you have broken the site rules or not.

How do I send a personal message to another member?

You need to be a member of Maggie's Online Centre to send or receive personal messages, so register or log in to your profile first.

You can also click on "Create a new message" which appears to the right of your profile picture on your dashboard and then just type the username of the person you want to contact in the address box.

Any messages you receive will appear on your dashboard in the 'My Messages' section. Click on the title to read and on 'Reply' to send a response.

You will need to be the member's friend to read any messages from them, so click accept on the friend request if you haven't previously done so.

What are conversations?

Conversations are places to chat with other members within the Online Centre.

They are split into different headings called Topics. You can reply to a conversation or create your own.

How do I start or add to a conversation?

You need to be a member of Maggie's Online Centre to participate in the conversations so register or log in to your profile first.

To start your own conversation, select the conversation topic you would like to talk within and click on 'Start A New Conversation In This Topic'. Your conversation will go live immediately for other members to read and comment.

To add a comment to a specific conversation, select the conversation by clicking on its title. Type your comment in the 'Add A Comment' box and click 'Submit Comment'. If there are a lot of comments you will have to scroll through to the bottom of the page to find the 'Add A Comment' box.

What is a group?

There are different types of groups in the Online Centre: live online support groups (real time live sessions and support groups led by members of our Online Team). Booked sessions where you can book a private conversation with a memebr of the online team for example our benefits advisor, nutritional advisor or a cancer support specialist nurse.

How do I find other members to add to my Maggie's Friends list?

How do I add photos to my photo gallery?

You need to be a member of Maggie's Online Centre to add any photos so register or log in to your profile first

To create a gallery click on 'My Galleries' on the left-hand menu. Type in a name for your gallery and click 'Create Gallery'. You can now add some photos to your new gallery or any you've previously created by choosing the gallery you want to add to from the dropdown menu in the 'Upload A New Item' section and then click 'Browse' to find and upload the chosen photo. Give the photo a title and description and add some tags (or keywords) to describe it. Click 'Upload image' to save the photo to your gallery.

What is a tag?

A tag is a keyword added to a piece of content to make it easier to find. For example, if you have written a blog entry about losing your hair after chemotherapy treatment you could tag it with the words 'chemotherapy', 'treatment' and 'hair-loss'.

How do I add tags?

Tags can be added to your blog and galleries - fill in the 'tags' box when you are creating the content. Each tag (keyword) should be separated by a comma.

How do I complain about content that I think breaks site rules?

Click on the 'alert a moderator' link next to the piece of content you think breaks site rules. You can type a comment if you want or just click 'send alert'. This will send the piece of content to the moderator to check against site rules and take appropriate action.

If this section hasn't answered your query about the site please send a message to Robyn, our Online Centre Head or post a conversation here.
