Mouth Cancer

Hello Stan,

Welcome to Maggie's Online Centre....

I realise that you're hoping to hear from anyone else who has had mouth cancer, but in the mean time, I thought I'd reply too.

It's a long time to be without solid food, and although you're probably getting the nutrients you need through the Frebusin drinks, it's not as satisfying as a proper meal.

It can take many months to manage solid foods, and depending on the extent of your tongue surgery, it may be that you'll always be on a soft diet. As it sounds an understandable worry for you - have you a specialist nurse at the hospital, or a head and neck speech therapist that you can email?

There hopefully should be some support available to you following the big surgical procedure you've had. They may have done, or need to do, some tests to see how your swallowing is now, 6 months post operatively.

The Mouth Cancer Foundation has an online forum, where you may find your questions answered, as it is for people affected by any oral cancer. It can feel very lonely when you're post surgery, and everyone is thinking your life has got back to normal....

Warm wishes
