Ten Top Tips for Claiming Benefits

Hello everyone,

My colleague, Steph, the Benefits Advisor at Maggie's Newcastle, has just posted a really handy article -  Ten Top Tips for Claiming Benefits -  on the Maggie's main website.

You can read it by clicking on the link here.

It can always feel a bit confusing, lonely and worrying to have to get to grips with a benefits system,  that might have been totally unfamiliar to you before cancer came into your life.

It can feel really hard to ask for the support to which you are entitled - and to which you have paid in - over the years. It can at times feel like you pitched against a giant  - and not always seemingly caring - bureaucracy.

But please, never give up and know that you are not alone! Your individual experience will be shared by almost every other other Online Centre member and visitor to other Maggie's Centres.

So there is much support to be drawn from - and offered to - others affected by cancer :-).  Just don't swapping your NI or bank account details :-)

There are benefit advisors out there to help, starting with a warm welcome and helping hand from Steph at Newcastle and all my colleagues in Maggie's Centres across the land. You can find your nearest Centre from the page here

But if you are reading this, then my cover is already well and truly blown :-) You know where I am and can message me - just by clicking here - from wherever - and at whenever - you like.

If nothing else, I can start the process - that Steph suggests - of exploring the different benefits relevant to your situation and what's involved in accessing your entitlements.

So that even if you decide that you really need to see someone locally face to face to go any further, you will know that the effort is now worthwhile and with some handy information to take to your session. I can always suggest someone in your area.

But if working together here in the Online Centre suits you, then we can go right through the benefits journey together; to a decision on your claim or even tackling an appeal.

There's a whole range of different ways of getting benefits support within the Online Centre and you can read a summary of what's available - with links to help you find it - in the Benefits Blog here.

So do have a look at Steph's top tips, put aside any thoughts that there is nothing you could get for. And any excuses for not at least checking out what you may be entitled to with me. Please do get in touch :-)

And also please feel free to join this conversation and share your thoughts, experiences of dealing with the benefits system and any comments or queries concerning Steph's top tips. Just post your comments below.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Online Centre Benefits Advisor
