Clarissa Dalloway

Started by Anonymous on 17 October 2013 at 16:48

Clarissa Dalloway is the protagonist of the book Mrs Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf. Set in the years immediately after WW1, the book takes us through a day in the life of Mrs Dalloway. She is preparing for a dinner party at her home that evening. This poem is my 'take' on the story of Clarissa, I hope it intrigues you and makes you want to read the story - if you haven't already.

Mrs Dalloway

clarissa, Clarissa,

your beauty and grace

is apparent to all

who look into your face.

When you buy flowers

or when you buy gloves,

do you ever think back

through your life and your loves?

You're famed for the dinners

and parties you hold.

But life's not that simple  -

or were you never told?

Never told of the hurt,

never told of the pain,

not told of the anger,

not told of the shame?

Do you ever think

of the Glorious Dead?

Or mourn for their loss

as you lay in your bed?

Did you know of Septimus,

hear how he died

impaled on the railings

in front of a crowd?

When you had influenza

did you think you might die?

Or do you ever feel

that your life was a lie?

Clarissa, Clarissa

your charm and your grace

is just a facade,

oh, it's such a disgrace.
