Second time round

Hoping this helps....

Hoping this helps me at any rate. I was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer a couple of months ago after my first diagnosis 7 years ago. The tumours have been removed and scans are clear so I have a huge amount to be thankful for. The tumours were HER2 positive so I am waiting for chemo and Herceptin to start at the beginiing of June.

I've found the experience quite different this time round. For a start, and with the kids only 2 and 6 years old,  first time I wanted to get through the treatment and out the other side and put the whole experience behind me. When the cancer came back I felt quite differently. It was more scary in some ways - its hard not to feel that its really determined to get the better of you when it comes back. Others reactions were different too in some cases - lots of people know someone who's had breast cancer once but not many know someone who has had a recurrence and I think people find it even harder to know what to say. But the main change has been that I now feel that cancer has been so much part of my life for the past 7 years that I can no longer pretend it is just going to go away (even if the tumours do) but instead I need to accept what has happened and is happening and, kind of embrace it (probably not the right word but struggling to find another). So this blog... and my first Creative Writing session at my local Maggie's Centre this afternoon which I am both apprehensive about but also looking forwards to.

I am hoping this will be therapeutic for me - we'll see.
