High Fibre or Low Fibre?

Started by Anonymous on 15 March 2010 at 09:23

I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005 and am currently between treatments, with pressure symptoms causing chronic constipation.   My Consultant advises a low fibre diet  while my GP thinks I should stick to a high fibre diet!

My own inclination is to keep with the high fibre .   I take one Co-danthramer capsule every night which I think helps a bit to keep my stools soft.

Such a boring subject!   But I'd be grateful for any furthe advice you can offer.

    Hi PollyG,

The best way to deal with this would be to ask your own medical team - as they are the ones who know your particular situation the best. Thus, they can give you the best advice on a diet for the longer term.

Have you had any face-to-face contact with a nutritionist at the cancer unit you visit?

Thank you for the information sheet.   Because I want to put as much distance between chemo treatments as possible, I realise I need a diet which is not short term or so restrictive - more like a medium fibre diet perhaps!    Perhaps I should speak to Kellie  - can I do this by email?    Thanks.

    Hi PollyG,

Sorry for the delay in responding. As someone with no idea how to answer your question, I had to ask one of our nutritionists, Kellie for advice.

She said this: "Definitely take your consultant's advice. A low-fibre diet is designed to reduce the risk of a bowel obstruction and to provide some relief from discomfort."

She's also supplied this information sheet, which I hope you'll find helpful.

Do let us know how you get on with it all.

    All the best,
    KD
